Text 19 Apr Why I think Stargate Universe S02E17 is awesome

Note: If you haven’t watched this episode and you don’t like spoilers, don’t read this post.

So I’ve been a fan of the whole Stargate franchise since I watched it with my dad when I was young. It’s full of adventure, great characters and awesome actors.

But when I saw this episode, I was intrigued. The whole idea of yourself going back in time from a different timeline and creating a history in this timeline is awesome.

In the episode, the exhibition team from the Destiny (an Ancient ship that is apparently named so because it’s going to a place where apparently all time began) arrive on a planet which could possibly have what they need for clean air on the ship. However, they are met with a couple human locals (who speak English) and actually recognise them. These locals introduce themselves as the team’s ancestors.

In a previous episode (S02E12) the crew met with the Destiny from an alternate timeline which had tried to dial Earth using a star as the power source (the Destiny recharges through solar energy) but the wormhole was unstable and only the first person that went through survived (along with the person who stayed on the ship, Rush, which died in an explosion later), or at least that’s what they thought. However, as it turns out, those that apparently ‘didn’t survive’ actually came out of a different Stargate (because when there is a solar flare on a close star/sun the exit of a wormhole jumps to a different gate OR goes back in time).

In this episode (S02E17) the crew of this timeline learns that not only did the crew from the alternate timeline come out of a different wormhole, but they also jumped 2000 years back in time. While the crew from the alternate timeline didn’t know this, they went on to live on that different planet and eventually built a whole new civilisation.

Anyway, the Ancients had made a portable flying camera with sensors (called a Kino) which was used to investigate the viability of a planet before anyone had to go through the gate. The crew from the alternate timeline used this to record where they were, their plans, and their progress. The video from a Kino (one from the alternate timeline) was later shown to the team of this timeline. Imagine how weird it is to see yourself do something that you never actually did, but a different you had.

But think about it. How awesome would it be to know that you, or at least a different you, had survived your whole life on an unknown planet and built a whole civilisation out of almost nothing. Here is a photo of the city after 2000 years:
